BECOME A VOLUNTEER AT NELSON WOMEN'S CENTRE

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BEATING HEART OF THE CENTRE. THEY COME FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND BRING WITH THEM A RICH DIVERSITY OF SKILLS, EXPERIENCES, AND PASSIONS. FROM DIGGING IN THE GARDEN AND TIDYING THE VILLA, TO WELCOMING VISITORS AND HELPING RUN ACTIVITIES, OUR VOLUNTEERS PLAY A HANDS-ON ROLE IN MAKING THE CENTRE FEEL LIKE HOME.

Some quietly nurture the space through daily chores, while others lead creative workshops, host gatherings, or lend their warmth to hosting and support roles. Many go above and beyond to ensure our services run smoothly and our community feels cared for.

HERE ARE SOME THE ROLES WE REGULARLY SEEK TO FILL:

1. VOLUNTEER & CONTRACT COUNSELLORS

We recognise the numerous benefits of providing a low-cost counselling service: women in need gain access to skilled, low-cost counselling while senior counselling students and recent graduates gain valuable face-to-face counseling experience, which strengthens their skills and enables them to work towards NZAC or a similar professional organisation membership. We have recently starting paying our graduates a small stipend to go towards living wage and to tautoko our counsellors in this important femme-heavy industry.  If you are interested to apply to become a volunteer or contract counsellor, please email here.

2. DAYTIME VOLUNTEERS

Daytime volunteers are vital in helping keep the the Centre a welcoming and pleasant space. No day is the same as volunteers help in welcoming guests,  keeping the space tidy,  assisting in workshop preparations, or sharing a cuppa and conversations with visitors. Minimum 2 hours, 1 day a week.

3. GOVERNANCE MEMBER

Are you passionate about empowering women and gender-diverse people in our community? We’re looking for volunteers to join our governance group—people who can offer strategic leadership and help shape the future of the Nelson Women’s Centre. As a governance volunteer, you’ll contribute to the Centre’s long-term sustainability, provide oversight and guidance, and support our vision and values. We welcome a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, and are especially keen to hear from those with knowledge in governance, community development, financial oversight, or not-for-profit leadership. If you’re values-aligned and ready to help lead meaningful change, we’d love to hear from you.
